Protect Your Credit Cards: What to Do to Keep Your Cards Safe

Card Security

Cyber fraud is a serious problem that many consumers and industries are struggling with. Millions of people are affected by credit card fraud each year. The number of fraud victims and losses due to fraud all over the world keeps increasing, and credit cards are prime targets. That is why you should learn how to keep your credit cards safe.

In 2016, the Nilson Report estimated that losses due to credit card fraud topped $24.71 billion, a 12% increase from the previous year. In 2017, consumers in the US alone lost $905 million USD to fraud, which is 7% higher than in 2016, with credit card fraud being the most common form of identity theft; 33 million Americans were victims of card fraud in 2017.

Earlier, we presented tips on how to stay safe on your smartphone. Now, we want to help you protect yourself against credit card fraud by offering you 6 tips on how to keep your credit cards safe:

Keep an Eye on Your Card

When you receive a new card, the first thing to do is sign it on the back and make sure you destroy the old card.

Never leave your card unattended anywhere, and when making a purchase don’t take your eyes off the card. If you do, make sure you’re getting the right card back. If your card is lost or stolen, report it immediately. Fraudulent use of cards normally occurs within hours of the loss or theft.

Don’t Store or Share Your Confidential Information

Always keep your confidential information private. Do not write down your PIN anywhere, memorize it, and do not store information such as passwords or your credit card information in browsers or anywhere where they are unprotected. Be sure to turn off your browser’s autocomplete settings to avoid it storing your confidential information.

Also, do not share your personal information with anyone via telephone or email. You should never give out your card number by phone, unless you know that you are dealing with a reputable company.

To keep your personal information safe, you should always shred old receipts and statements before throwing them away. Shredding documents with your personal information is the best way to protect yourself from identity theft, as this will make it harder for a fraudster to find any information about you that they can use.

Beware of Phishing Scams

Common online scams today include the phishing emails, where hackers attempt to obtain personal information such as credit card details, usernames, and passwords by pretending to represent reputable organizations such as your bank or telephone company. Fraudsters are getting better every day at tricking someone into clicking on a link in one of these emails. These links either bring you to a website that looks like one you frequent often, where your information can be stolen, or they infect your system with malware that collects your data, including PINs and CVV authentication numbers when you shop online. Never click on a link in a suspicious email.

If you receive an email that appears to be sent by a legitimate company but asks for sensitive financial information and you are suspicious of it, always contact the company directly to verify the authenticity of the email. Banks will not ask you for confidential information via email.

Regularly Verify Your Bank Activity

Check your financial statements regularly. You should visit your bank or credit card website at least once a week to check that no unauthorized withdrawals or charges have been made. Keep your receipts so you can match them with the charges on your credit card statement. If you see anything suspicious, contact your bank or credit card provider immediately to report any charges that weren’t made by you.

Use Two-Factor Authentication

You should turn on two-factor authentication wherever possible, such as for your banking and credit card accounts. Two-factor authentication means that you cannot log in with only your username and password. Instead you will receive a one-time code that you must use to be able to log in. This guarantees an extra level of protection as it makes it more difficult for fraudsters to access your accounts.

Be Careful When Using Public Wi-Fi Network

Do not use any websites where you enter your card information when using a public Wi-Fi network. It is also recommended to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) that lets you send encrypted communications through a separate and secure private network while using a public Wi-Fi network. Also, when shopping on a mobile device, you should use your cellular data instead.

Always be careful when using your credit cards. By following these precautions, you can ensure the security of your cards and protect your personal information.

Payza has security and fraud prevention in place to stop problems before they happen, so you can be assured that your funds in your Payza Account are protected. Also, when making an online purchase using Payza, our payment system adds an extra layer of protection between you and the merchant as your payment details are not revealed to the merchant when you pay.

Payza credit card update

The year is just getting started but Payza’s team of developers has already completed an important project that we think our customers will love: improved credit card payments and deposits!

While you won’t notice any changes to your Payza account, this update involves significant improvements to how our system executes credit card transactions to help ensure the best possible user experience.

Over the last year, we spoke to many customers who informed us of issues they faced when trying to make a credit card payment or a credit card deposit. Using this information, Payza’s development team implemented a number of fixes aimed at improving the experience for all our members.

With the latest improvements to credit card processing, members will face fewer declines when attempting to add funds or make a payment by credit card. One week after implementing this fix, we noticed credit card transaction declines decrease by over 50%, so more of our customers are able to complete their transactions on the first try.

We have also improved an issue with currency exchanges that was causing some members to experience higher than expected charges. We’re confident that with these new updates, our customers will love using their credit cards with Payza more than ever!

Our team will continue to monitor this feature to judge the success of our latest improvements. We welcome your comments and feedback and will be surveying selected users in the coming weeks.

Payza Recommends Payment Gateway Best Practices

MONTREAL, QC and NEW YORK, NY and LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM–(Marketwired – Apr 29, 2014) – At first glance, most payment gateways seem similar — enabling the processing of credit card payments. However, by taking a deeper look, ecommerce businesses will find that there can be significant differences and should ask about four critical areas of functionality before selecting a gateway. Choosing the optimal gateway for a business is important since credit cards remain by far the most preferred payment method. Credit cards accounted for 71.5 percent of U.S. payment volume and 78 percent of U.K. payment volume in 2012.

“The online payment gateway should provide an optimal mix of convenience, value and security,” said Ali Nizameddine, Payza’s Executive Vice President in charge of global product and technology strategy. “And, it’s critical that the payment provider offer the support needed to keep processing up and running at all times.”

According to the blog, “Picking the Right Payment Gateway for Your Business,” merchants should look for a payment gateway that includes four critical elements:

Convenience – Businesses should expect functionality such as daily settlements direct to the business’ bank account. Customers will appreciate the option to save their payment information for quick and easy repeat checkouts. The gateway should offer customers the ability to set up subscription payments at no extra cost. It should also be designed to work with a wide range of third-party online shopping carts.
Value – Businesses should expect a free merchant account without monthly or yearly service fees. They should also be able to process payments for under 3 percent and minimal extra transaction costs, with all costs transparent. The gateway should also include a robust resolution center that facilitates handling disputes with customers, minimizing the potential for chargebacks.
Security – Any gateway used by an ecommerce business should be PCI Level 1 compliant; i.e., it has undergone a stringent certification process to ensure secure credit card transactions. With PCI Level 1 compliance, transactions are protected by sophisticated encryption technology to keep information safe. Merchants should ask about advanced approaches to minimize the risk of fraud, while also minimizing the risk of “false positives.”
Support – Gateways should be accessible 24/7/365, and support should be available by whichever medium is most convenient for the customer — phone, live chat or email.

10 Trending Product Ideas You Can Sell Online

Want to start an e-commerce business but aren’t sure what to sell? There are thousands of product options, and narrowing it down can be challenging. From unique fashion accessories to health foods to vaping devices, here are 10 interesting product ideas with a strong upwards curve according to Google Trends.

1. Bow Ties

The fashion industry is always thriving, and men’s fashion is no exception. While ties have always been a classic accessory, bow ties are popping up on dapper dudes everywhere. Give your product an edge by using vintage materials or distinctive styling, like the dashing Slim Line Diamond Point design.

2. Pocket Squares

Following hot on the heels of the bow tie trend, pocket squares are also making a comeback as the newest must-have item on the men’s fashion accessory scene. An added bonus is that with some practice they are a product you can make yourself, thereby reducing your overhead costs and increasing profit.

3. Paleo Bars

The health industry has at least one thing in common with fashion, and that’s trends. One of the bigger trends at the moment is the Paleo diet, a nutritional plan based on the diet of Paleothetic humans. There are countless delicious recipes for Paleo versions of desserts and quick breakfasts on-the-go that can find a target market in health-conscious consumers.

4. Wood Sunglasses

Sunglasses are the quintessentially cool accessory, and with so many plastic or metal frames out there, consumers are looking for the newest styles. Wood is the new customer favorite, with Google Trends showing consistent yearly growth.

5. Wood Watches

Wood continues to be a popular choice for accessories – wood watches have been around for about ten years and interest in this product has steadily increased. There are still opportunities for growth (and opportunities for puns about time being money), although in the last couple of years growth seems to have plateaued slightly.

6. E-Cigarettes

E-Cigarettes are quickly becoming a big business, mentioned everywhere from Reddit chains to Forbes Magazine. Sometimes called a personal or digital vaporizer, an e-cigarette is a self-contained vaping device used to simulate tobacco smoking.

7. E-Liquid

Along with the upward trend for e-cigarettes, the liquid refills used in e-cigarettes are also (logically) seeing consistent growth. With some research you may be able to make your own unique blend of the liquid refill used in e-cigarettes, which makes this a great business opportunity.

8. Leggings

A perfect blend of comfort and fashion, leggings are a product with a strong demand, showing considerable growth over the last couple of years. From leather to bold prints to organic cotton, there’s a style for every personality and every budget.

9. Coconut Oil

Pinterest is always a great tool for gauging trends in consumer interest, and there are thousands of Pins showing how coconut oil can be used in body scrubs, lip balms, deep conditioner and dozens of other health and body products.

10. Matcha Powder

Specialized tea products have seen a steady rise alongside the demand for gourmet coffee, and matcha, the finely milled green tea that is considered an integral part of Japanese culture, has spread to fans all over the world. Used as an ingredient in everything from classic tea beverages to delicate chocolate desserts, matcha is a hit with online shoppers.

Getting Paid Online

Once you have chosen the best product to sell online, you’ll need to decide how you want to get paid online.  You’ll want a payment processor that is easy to integrate onto your website and is secure and reliable. A Payza account makes it easy to accept online payments, and there are lots of added bonuses like free recurring billing, built-in fraud protection, and no hidden fees. With Payza’s Credit Card Top Up feature, you can also make it easy for your customers to pay you instantly by credit card.
